What Is Dyslipidemia (High Cholesterol)?

Cholesterol and Atherosclerosis — informational image

Dyslipidemia refers to abnormal levels of cholesterol or other blood lipids.

High levels of LDL cholesterol are an important contributor to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

Risk assessment may include:

  • LDL cholesterol
  • HDL cholesterol
  • Triglycerides
  • Non-HDL cholesterol
  • Lipoprotein(a) in selected patients
  • Apolipoprotein B in selected patients

The appropriate target depends on the individual's cardiovascular risk.

Early identification and effective management of abnormal cholesterol levels can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
